Good Intentions and Bad Behavior April 9, 2007

When I first began to learn how to use a computer, my Word Processing skills were limited to clear speech and slow typing.  order to accumulate the level of skill and software understanding needed for professional usefulness, I had to practice old skills and learn new ones, then practice further. I know myself well enough to realize that more than two repetitions of typing exercises such as “The Quick Brown Fox…” are extremely unlikely. I dislike make-work and tend to drop boring procedures that have no other purpose than being Good For You. So, to keep myself amused and participating while delving into the particulars of programs like Microsoft Word, I decided to spend 15 to 30 minutes a day telling stories. I like stories. A few hours into exploring the Internet showed me that there were a LOT of people out there who also appear to like stories, and pictures too. Also, I could easily see that a great deal of the content out there had a sexual component, and there seemed to be more than a few people who don’t mind that at all either!

And so, I began to practice my typing skills, my research skills,  editing, and even storytelling itself too.  It began to become more interesting, and I started to be able to do it more easily as well, which is indeed the desired end one practices towards. When I discovered Usenet NewsGroups and the collectives of readers and writers that form to discuss ALL sorts of topics, I spent many hours doing just that. I found that I enjoy having readers who want to know what happens next, and the stories almost wrote themselves, leaving me to edit!

Then, as my skills increased, so did my workload, and the day-to-day matters consumed time that I had previously spent writing fiction and required me to let the stories accumulate untyped in my head for a bit as the needs of Real Life On A Daily Basis interefered. But I find I miss writing fiction, and sharing it, so I shall return to doing what I enjoy at least for parts of the time. I’ll be posting more here of portions of older work, and also new things. So do please drop by to visit again soon.
